Baedari pro_ject &
pro_posal
15th
August~14th October 2011
Hosted by Space Beam
Organized by Space Beam Planning Team
Partnership with Reforming Baedari as a historical and cultural village
Committee
Sponsored by Incheon Foundation for Arts and Culture
Space Beam is currently looking for artists and researchers
to participate in the Artist-in-Residence programme 2011. As an alternative art
space based in Baedari, East Incheon, South Korea, we have been actively engaged
in and conducting discussions and various art practices concerning roles of art
in the local community.
Programme Overview
‘Baedari
pro_ject & pro_posal’
Under the title of ‘PUBIC STUDIO’, Space Beam has been intervening in the issues
of relationship between artists, locals and the local community over the last 5
years. With continuous evaluation and experimental approach to engage in the
local community, we have been seeking to engender discourse on contemporary art
and artists.
These were to go beyond the accustomed and conventional
disposition (artist-relocation-moving into a studio-production-open studio) to
run and undertake artist in residency programmes, and to assess and identify
roles
of art practices and activities. In other words, whereas conventional
disposition of artist in residence programmes were to promote artists’ career
and to enrich the local community, our approach was to discover alternative
ways and methods to genuinely communicate with the locals and to experience the
area as a resident through art.
Space Beam Artist-in-Residence Programme 2011 aims to be
clearer on its purpose, scheme and expectation on artists in residence on the
basis of experiences, achievements and obstacles we have had up until now.
‘Baedari
pro_ject & pro_posal’ is initiated to invite
projects and proposals for Baedari village that has been facing issues on its
redevelopment and an industrial motorway that has been planned to built cross
over the village, yet stopped to proceed. This year we expect our artists in
residence to work with the locals, specialists and activists to revitalise
Baedari
as a historical and cultural village through discussions and actions. We want
our artists in residence to demonstrate professionalism and to suggest
appropriate
ethics for village regeneration within 2 months.
For this, Space Beam invites both national and international
professionals in the areas of public/community arts, urban planning,
architecture,
landscape design and public design. We will support participants to realise
their projects and to carry out their research by organising meetings with
administrators,
specialists, activists and artists in the region. We hope to share international
opinions on village regeneration, good ways of doing it and to assess its
practicality.

About Space Beam
Space Beam started as a local art study group in 1995, and had carried out
numerous
activities including conducting seminars, publishing art journals and organising
art exhibitions and so on. In January 2002, Space Beam opened its own space to
the public was in Guwoldong, Incheon to meet the needs of a space for regular
meetings and formal discussions and to realise ideas.
Since then, Space Beam has been trying to establish identity of the local
culture under the mottos; quasi-public and localism and autonomy. We have been
arranging productive dialogues regarding the local art scene and alternative
art events intervening in the course of art production, circulation and
consumption.
In September 2007, Space Beam made a new home in the closed down brewery
building, Baedari. We continue to bring to light the issues that deal with
local and regional identity through cultural activities aiming to make Incheon
a welcoming urban community.
Baedari Village
"Baedari" is the compound word of "Bae" which means a ship
and "Dari" meaning a bridge in Korean. People named this region
Baedari because there was a bridge where people took a ship when seawater
flowed in this region in the past. There is another story about naming that it
was called Baedari since a row of ships played the role of a bridge. Baedari
village includes several administrative districts of Changyoung-dong,
Gumgok-dong, Songhyun-dong, and Songlim-dong in Incheon.
People call Baedari "Mother of Incheon" since the modern history,
culture, education, religion and Industry of Incheon started from here.
Christian
missionary work and modern education started here when Incheon opened its port
to foreign trade in the modern era. Old constructions had been built more than
a century ago and still remain in this region. Destitute Koreans were flocked
here after the Japanese Colonial Era and Korean War. They developed places for
commerce and facilities for working class and formed their own culture. Above
all, second-hand bookstores are one of the special attributes in Baedari. The
second-hand
bookstores had satisfied thirst for knowledge in the locals after the Korean
War.
In recent days as Incheon expanded its scale moving its centre
to another region, Baedari does not attract people and fewer people visit. This
change rather provided better circumstances to preserve its unique history and
culture from the threat of redevelopment. However, Baedari is now on the verge
of being destroyed as the local government unveiled its plan to construct an
industrial motorway cross over Baedari, so as to connect Songdo and Cheongra
district, which are designated as Incheon Free Economic Zones. Organizations
working
in the fiends of art and culture and activists have moved to Baedari and have
been working together against the local government for over the last five years
in the hope that the local government invalidate the motorway plan and seek
cultural renaissance. Most recently, the whole region is on the brink of being
crushed
as the government announced that its City Remodelling Plan would include this
region, so we have initiated Reforming Baedari as a historical and cultural
village Committee to seek alternative solutions and to take actions.
