That's a good question Marc. I would think that it's for simplicity and that this simplicity makes it easier to link together unrelated projects. However, it would have made more sense to me to use JSON or XML as there are probably more people who already have projects delivering feeds in those formats. It would be more work setting up ways to completely parse those formats but not impossible.
