Where It Falls is titled after text fragments from the original 1713 survey of
Newark,
NJ. The survey defines the boundaries of the city with 4 trees, each of which is
individually described, and the Passaic River. The exhibition includes
large-scale
silver gelatin images made between 2002 and 2012, on foot and via helicopter,
and
digital imagery from Google Earth and spycams of rooftop texts.
"Where It Falls", connotes, for me, notions of expectations and resolution, and
what paraprofessionals call outcomes. This exhibition represents a summing up of
about a decade of my work, and I'm excited to share it with you.
In 2004, I began writing texts, in 12-foot + high letters, on rooftops
throughout
Newark, NJ, and photographing them via helicopter. Initially, this was a
solitary
act, inspired by the conceptual function of eminent domain as instant blight, as
well as by the widespread, false assumption by many Internet users that Google
Earth functions in real time. In 2010, Google Earth updated their publicly
available
satellite imagery, making the texts visible to everyone, and will presumably
continue
to capture and update the digital record. Almost 300 years later, the 4 trees
named
in the survey will be written back into the landscape.
Where it falls into Pasayack River
Thence Continuing Down where it began.
Philadelphia is not only home to the Print Center, but to more galleries,
museums,
collectives, murals, etc than I could possibly list without sounding like the
tourist
bureau. If you can, make a weekend of it!
Thank you to all the people who have encouraged this project in many ways.
This project is supported by the Harpo Foundation and the NoMAA Creative Grant
Program, made possible by the JPMorgan Chase Foundation and the Upper
Manhattan
Empowerment Zone Development Corporation.
