A NEW CONCERTO COMPETITION CELEBRATES CUTTING EDGE CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGICAL
INNOVATION

As a celebration of the concerto form (but not as we know it), a new concerto
competition with a total prize pool of $50,000 has launched. The International
Space Time Concerto Competition borrows from our rich musical history, embraces
the future and promotes the present.

The brainchild of the University of Newcastle, Australia, the initiative sees a
creative collaboration with, the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in
Singapore, Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, Waikato University in New
Zealand, Bruckner University and Ars Electronica in Austria.

While most categories of the competition are only open to Australian-based
students and alumni, the International Space Time Concerto Competition is
seeking submissions from international students and alumni for potential
involvement in the Network Music Performance category.

Due to the power of the Internet it is now possible for musicians that are
thousands of kilometres apart, to play together from their own spaces
simultaneously and in real time. As such, entries are open for you to produce a
work for a Networked Music Performance with the support of an internet-linked
ensemble spanning five countries. You are invited to adapt, remix or
recontextualise an existing concerto or compose your own concerto.
The International Space Time Concerto competition is looking for creative and
innovative entries that explore at new ways to utilize networked music
performance and latency. You will have the opportunity to explore visualization
with screens and collaborate with our international partners to produce your
work.

With help from our competition partner Polycom and their advanced technology,
the competition will culminate in the opportunity for the finalists to perform
at the final Networked Music Performance Concert which will be performed live
at the five locations. These locations include the futuristic Deep Space Venue
at Ars Electronica in Linz and the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of
Music Concert Hall on November 30 2012.

The prize money for this competition has been generously sponsored by
benefactor Jennie Thomas with further donations from the Friends of the
University.

Entries for The International Space Time Concerto Competition will be accepted
from April 30 until July 1.
