PARK ART... in Haringey

Lion
Scaffolding Sculpture 2012 by Ben Long

25 July to 23 September 2012

Produced and curated by UP Projects in partnership with Haringey Council and Furtherfield, PARK ART... in Haringey is taking place in several parks and gardens across the borough as part of our cultural offering for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

For Bruce Castle Park, Haringey Council has commissioned a major new temporary 'Scaffolding Sculpture' by the artist Ben Long.

The Scaffolding Sculpture of a Lion, 2012 references the traditional sculpture commonly found in the grounds of stately homes and its symbolism echoes Bruce Castle's own historical associations. The lion will stand as a nine metre high contemporary monument. It is being built in-situ over the next few weeks leading up to the 25 July - the day when the Olympic torch is carried through Haringey. The lion is the last in a series of this type of sculpture which the artist began in 2002.

Alongside the Scaffolding Sculpture, a light and sound installation in the Tudor Tower, created by Martin Richman, will respond to the unique characteristics of this Hawksmews and its Tudor heritage.

In the south of the borough at Furtherfield Gallery, Mackenzie Pavilion in Finsbury Park, partner organisation Furtherfield has commissioned artist and composer Michael Szpakowski to work with local people to create an immersive soundscape. The acoustic experience is to include field recordings of children’s rhymes, thus invoking the collective memory of childhood that people bring to Haringey from all over the world.

Works by the late sculptor Anita Rivera, permanently exhibited in the Hornsey Library Sculpture Garden, also feature in the project.
