Closing of "Open Laboratory" residency
with /dev/art, Dorkbot & Upgrade! Paris

To wrap up their "Open Laboratory" residency, /dev/art, Dorkbot and Upgrade!
Paris offer a conference event on social utopias carried by technologies
("Open", "Innovation", "Sharing", "Community").
One central topic is to understand how these utopias are embedded in the heart
of industrial transformations; The goal is to analyse hybrid structures such as
art/industry/science/technology and as such, theirgo-between roles in
harnessing dynamics and outsourcing, specific to immaterial economy.

* Usinette is a fablab and a hacklab. It's not an atelier, nor a factory.
Usinette is both a group and an approach (a manifesto on the reappropriation of
tools and techniques, and the dissemination of their related knowledge).
Usinette is also an experiment (in helping to implement public-spirited
fabrication workshops).

* Johan Söderberg is a researcher at Laboratoire Techniques, Territoires et
Sociétés (LATTS) and Institut Francilien Recherche et Innovation Société
(IFRIS) at Écoles des Ponts, Paris. In his research he looks at open hardware
projects where hardware equipment is being developed in the same spirit as free
software development. He investigates what infrastructure it takes to enable
user-driven innovation of tangible products. Of particular interest to him is
how new divisions of labour are re-established between users, and the role of
design in negotiating this process. Theoretically he is located in the
intersection between STS theory and social movement theory. His analytical
focus is on the users' ideas and values and how these influence the design of
the technology.

* Ewen Chardronnet is an author, artist and curator based in Paris. In the past
years Ewen has been active with projects focusing on information systems and
tactical media, and engaged in various collaborative works such as the
Association of Autonomous Astronauts, Makrolab, Acoustic Space Lab and
World-Information.Org. He published in 2001 "Quitter la Gravité", the french
anthology on the Association of Autonomous Astronauts and in 2003 received the
Leonardo New Horizons Award. His recent works include electromagnetic waves
related artworks with the Spectral Investigations Collective and the journal
"The Laboratory Planet".

The Gaîté Lyrique "Open Laboratory" residency hosted /dev/art, Dorkbot and
Upgrade! Paris from April 2012 to April 2013, who has been organizing regular
meetings on technological practices and critics on various aspects (biology,
code, law, language, SF, academicism).

Pour clôturer la résidence "Laboratoire Ouvert", /dev/art, Dorkbot et Upgrade!
Paris proposent un après-midi de conférences sur les utopies sociales qui
accompagnent les technologies ("Open", "Innovation", "Partage", "Communauté").
Il s'agira de voir comment ces utopies se retrouvent au coeur des
transformations de l'industrie; analyser les structures hybrides
art/industrie/science/technologie et leur rôle d'intermédiaire dans les
dynamiques de captation et d'externalisation propres à l'économie immatérielle.

Usinette est à la fois un collectif (une association), une démarche (réflexion
autour de la réappropriation des techniques et des outils et de la diffusion
des savoirs liés) et une expérimentation (aide au déploiement d'ateliers de
fabrication citoyens à la croisée des hackerspaces et fablabs).

Johan Söderberg est un chercheur post-doctorant à l'Institut Francilien
Recherche Innovation Société (IFRIS), et au Laboratoire Techniques Territoires
et Sociétés (LATTS). Il a soutenu sa thèse en mars 2011 au département de
sociologie à Göteborg, en Suède. En automne 2008, il a été affecté à
l'Université Centrum pro Teoreticka Studia à Prague, en République Tchèque,
avant d'être rattaché l'année suivante à Sciences Philosophies et Sociétés, à
Namur, en Belgique. Il est aussi membre du comité de rédaction de deux revues,
Triple-C et le Journal of Peer Production.

Ewen Chardronnet est artiste et opérateur en art et média. Depuis 2000, ses
activités sont portées principalement par Ellipse, pour le développement de
projets d'expérimentation et de programmes curatoriaux. Il intervient
régulièrement pour l'agence d'intelligence culturelle World-Information et a
participé à différentes initiatives de moyen et long terme telles qu'Acoustic
Space Lab (art et radio-télécommunications spatiales) avec qui il a obtenu le
prix Leonardo Nouveaux Horizons en 2003. Membre actif du projet polaire I-TASC,
il a participé aux missions du laboratoire autosuffisant Makrolab dans les
Highlands en Ecosse et sur l'Île de Campalto dans la lagune de Venise. Il
dirige le journal Planète Laboratoire avec Bureau d'études et a publié Quitter
la Gravité pour l'Association des Astronautes Autonom
es (LR
17;Eclat 2001) et L'injection à moindre risque (Apothicom, CILDT, 2008).

La résidence "Laboratoire Ouvert" a accueilli dev/art, Dorkbot et Upgrade!
Paris de avril 2012 à avril 2013 à la Gaîté Lyrique, pour organiser ce cycle de
rencontres sur les pratiques et critiques des technologies (en relation à la
biologie, au code, au droit, au langage, au détournement, à la SF, à
l'académisme).
