I'm not sure the explanation is meant to explain anything, any more than advertising is meant to tell you about the actual properties of whatever it's selling. Yinka Shonibare has been doing this sort of stuff for years as actual physical installations and the words just evolve to fit whatever's fashionable at the moment.
