Graphical user interfaces are not meant to ease your interaction with your computer, they're intended to guide your use of your computer. The terminal is your friend. Using the terminal is like stroking the surface of an orange with your finger. Using GUI software is like doing the same but with a 1 mm film of plastic between your finger and the orange. Smoking a pipe should sound like an absurd concept. "." is a location. Where are you? (if you don't know... you don't know your computer, it knows you. Open the terminal and type "pwd". It will tell you where you are.
