Cleveland prefers to work with
insects. "It's a nuisance to
get permission to deal with
animals," he says. "NIH doesn't
regard insects as animals, so
you don't need an ethics review
of insect trials." In a 2012
report in the Journal of the
American Chemical Society, Scherson
and colleagues explain how they
devised an air-breathing enzymatic
biological cell using live cockroaches.
