I hope some people on the list might be interested to join us at Watermans on
World TB Day, Monday 24th March, and take part in a fascinating and accessible
multidisciplinary symposium bringing together key speakers from the fields of
tuberculosis research across art, science and the humanities.
The Symposium is taking place on the closing day of our current exhibition by
Anna Dumitriu, “The Romantic Disease: An Artistic Investigation of
Tuberculosis".

Speakers include:
Anna Dumitriu (Artist who created “The Romantic Disease: An Artistic
Investigation of Tuberculosis”) will discuss the project and the inspiration
behind this new body of work.
Dr John Paul (UK CRC Modernising Medical Microbiology Project and long term
collaborator with Anna Dumitriu) will discuss the place of TB in the natural
history of bacteria and how whole genome sequencing of bacteria is
revolutionising our understanding of the disease through the Modernising
Medical Microbiology Project.
Professor Bobbie Farsides (Professor of Ethics Brighton and Sussex Medical
School, and collaborator with Anna Dumitriu on “Trust me, I’m an artist”) will
discuss TB and the humanities.
Professor Melanie Newport (Professor in Infectious Diseases & Global Health at
Brighton and Sussex Medical School) will speak about the latest research into
TB in global medicine.
Dr Carole Reeves (Senior Lecturer in Science and Technology Studies, University
College London) will speak about her research into the stories of The Children
of Crag-y-nos and her investigation of a lost Tuberculosis treatment.
Dr Simon Park (Microbiologist and Artist, University of Surrey, one of the
‘Open Lab’ workshop leaders, and a collaborator with Anna Dumitriu) will
discuss his own artistic research.
Dr Simon Hall (Medical Doctor and Artist) will discuss the role of art in
communicating issues in medicine and how this can be used in the medical
training.
Target Tuberculosis (a charity providing treatment, care and support in Africa
and Asia) will discuss the challenges they face in developing countries and
their perspectives on the exhibition.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception and a final chance to view the
exhibition and a display of works produced in the ‘Open Lab’ workshop.

field of art and science brings together historical narratives and cutting edge

The project is made in collaboration with the UK CRC Modernising Medical
Microbiology Project and funded by The Wellcome Trust, Arts Council England and
London Borough of Hounslow.
World TB Day is a worldwide event aimed at raising public awareness of
tuberculosis and the efforts made to prevent and treat this disease.
About the ArtistAnna Dumitriu’s work blurs the boundaries between art and
science with a strong interest in the ethical issues raised by emerging
technologies. Her installations, interventions and performances use a range of
digital, biological and traditional media including live bacteria, robotics,
interactive media, and textiles. Her work has a strong international exhibition
profile and is held in several major public collections, including the Science
Museum in London.
