Lisa Ma - Where Are The Luddites: An Open Call for Bioluddites?
Near Now are pleased to present Where Are The Luddites: An Open Call for Bioluddites? a new project currently being developed by speculative designer Lisa Ma, following her research as part of the Internet of Growing Things residency.
“Where are the Luddites?” explores the present relevance of Luddism, in parallel with people’s awareness of the biotechnologies ubiquitous in our daily food, healthcare and environment. It sets out the hypothesis that there are no Luddites left in Nottingham (the city where the movement is thought to be founded) and wants to explore how people living in Nottingham relate to its international reputation.
Lisa Ma take insights from her work with invasives species in Human Invasive Interactions, an ongoing mass public experiment by Ma supported by Timelab, Fo:AM and Canvas TV in the Belgium vegetarian capital of Ghent. Involving chefs, nutritionists, scientists, the local community, the mayor and the national TV station - Human Invasive Interactions set out to explore how a city might house productive streams of public activism by consuming instead of destroying invasive animals and plants.
Using the meme of Bioluddism, Lisa Ma will use knowledge gained from her work in Belgium to reframe the contemporary relevance of Luddism in the modern era by shifting focus from its association with digital and communications technologies to the invisible innovations of biotechnology industries.
Through this event, the panel will discuss how we can democratize activism and take the complex debate surrounding biotechnology out of the test tube, beyond the academic, away from the glamour of bio-hackers and back into everyday scenarios.
Internet of Growing Things is a research commission produced by Broadway’s Near Now programme and is supported by Arts Council England.
