If you'd like to talk to us about working on your next project, get in touch: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) The Full Story The fascinating story of Chicago's sewer system ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=e22c20583c&e=fb974c70a3 ) Steven Johnson and Storythings have been working on How We Get To Next ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=65cddb9de8&e=fb974c70a3) , a publishing platform that tells stories about how innovation is solving global problems and shaping the future. Steven kicks things off with this brilliant story on how a smart engineer lifted Chicago to fit the sewer system. What it feels like to be internet famous ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=39affb415e&e=fb974c70a3 ) The brilliant Jason Kottke pulls together various bits of the internet to describe what it feels like to be internet famous. I particularly liked this from Erin Kissane on the problem with Twitter: "The first is feeling like I'm sitting at a sidewalk cafe, speaking in a conversational voice, but having that voice projected so loudly that strangers many streets away are invited to comment on my most inconsequential statements -- especially if something I say gets retweeted beyond my usual circles." Joi Ito's Shenzhen Trip Report ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=702c1db647&e=fb974c70a3 ) On a recent trip to Shenzen Joi Ito, Director of MIT's Media Lab, visited factories that are producing phones for $9, shops that sold microchips by the pound and phones in every shape and size: "Many were designed by the so-called Shanzhai pirates who started by mostly making knockoffs of existing phones, but had become agile innovation shops for all kind of new ideas because of the proximity to the manufacturing ecosystem." Gene Wilder's story of why he made Wonka do that forward roll ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=53df50fa88&e=fb974c70a3 ) I've only just stumbled upon this excellent series Blank on Blank which takes vintage interviews and animates them. Gene Wilder's portrayal of Wonka is one of my favourite performances ever. Here he tells the story of why he insisted that Wonka had a limp and carried a walking stick when the kids first him. A great series of interviews worth diving into. Why James Bridle is flying a balloon over London ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=0bfa887fea&e=fb974c70a3 ) In a world where we are increasingly tracked by invisible technology, James Bridle aims to share something with Londoners – via a balloon carrying anonymous Wi-Fi routers, mesh network repeaters and amateur radio antennae. War Photographer embeds himself in video game ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=8805b430e5&e=fb974c70a3 ) Time magazine's war photographer Ashley Gilbertson embeds himself in 'The Last of Us Remastered', a post apocalyptic video game, then uses Photo Mode to document the game’s protagonists as they fight to survive in a zombie-infested world. A place where ideas are dangerous and culture matters ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=48184d24ef&e=fb974c70a3 ) XOXO is a conference that takes place in Portland, Oregon celebrating independent art and technology. Whilst we are all waiting for the videos ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=6ef8ee32db&e=fb974c70a3) to drop here's the Verge take on it. The nicest place on the internet ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=6064871cf7&e=fb974c70a3 ) How did I miss this. It really is the nicest place on the internet The Marshmallow Test for grown-ups ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=b4fdd17b30&e=fb974c70a3 ) You may be familiar with Walter Mischel's Marshmallow Test ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=bb4c90a775&e=fb974c70a3) from the 1960's in which he left children in a room with some marshmallows. He told them they could eat one when he left the room. Anyone who waited until he returned would get two. The kids that waited performed better academically later in their lives. As adults we face the same temptations only through digital distractions. Here's how to deal with them... The best gif you will see then share today ( http://storythings.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac3c63206e0226f0b2c43f01d&id=17d075a7f0&e=fb974c70a3 ) Don't mention it.
