Thanks, Edward. I first stayed on the island in 1971, when I went around the island with a surveyor who was putting in electrical lines. Before then, people had relied on generators or gas light at night. I returned in 1974, when one of my friends who had relied on subsistence fishing and part-time work was earning good pay laying down the runway for the first airport. In 2013, I met up with old friends who had seen the whole modernization of the island, which now generates part of its electricity with a hybrid wind/hydraulic station. The island looks prosperous, though people do worry that in an economic crisis it is no longer self-sufficient.
