That's a rather broad question. One can argue that almost nothing is "really necessary". The flip side to this comes from database 001 or information theory 001, which is never have the same information in multiple locations without automatic replication as it is bound to get out of sync. Having two versions of the guide is just plain bad for this reason, as it is likely to lead to much confusion. There is no possible way for markdown source to satisfy the stated purpose of the guide which is to be a manual that is printable.
