I don't see the reason why one should edit the fonts.conf manually
because the system rebuilds the fonts cache at boot time. Besides, the
fonts.conf mandates:

   DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE.
        IT WILL BE REPLACED WHEN FONTCONFIG IS UPDATED.
        LOCAL CHANGES BELONG IN 'local.conf'.
