Does it happen always? I only see a delay if some fonts have been touched (i.e. after updating NetBSD or installing font packages).
You could also try to set xdm=NO in /etc/rc.conf, wait for a text login prompt, then log in as root and run: /etc/rc.d/xdm onestart If this does not show the delay, the delay is unrelated to X itself. Martin
