I've been using an amd64 guest with macos/x and virtualbox and it works
just fine... I booted it from a usb stick I built (and inserted on macos/x
as disk1):
/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxManage internalcommands \
createrawvmdk -filename usbdisk.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/disk1
