PPP would be equally suitable in general. It was just that SLIP would meet my needs with slightly less setup and overhead when attaching serial devices (no configuration files for each interface and no daemon). I started with SLIP becaue I thought it might be easier to try to check what was going over the wire because the encapsulation is so minimal.
