thanks for all of the replies. after posting i tried 9, and that failed to mount /.
so i switched from the 128G card to a 32G card, which finally worked. i presume it must be the hw which doesn't work with the larger uSD cards available now (the 128G cost only about $3 more than a 32G...). i also gave the sunday's current a try on the 32G, but that still failed to display anything or show up on the network. since my goal was just to have a bsd on the lan to keep up with the differences of configuring/maintaining bsd vs linux/gnu, i expect i'll stick with 9 for now. thanks again to all. i may have more q's to come (that board is in a case which blocks the gpio pins, but it does have a camera installed....) -JimC -- James Cloos <cl...@jhcloos.com> OpenPGP: 0x997A9F17ED7DAEA6
