Hello Todd, I have had the same issue with compressi g core dumps at startup. The problem was that when i started the x server it was freezing, and the next time i booted up the system it was compressing the core. It turned out that it was one of my usb devices. I have a usb hub that is causing that problem. I found that out with the crash tool in netbsd.
I now am not switching the mouse on until i get into X. That resolved the issue. Maybe inspecting the core dump file with crash can help pinpoint the issue.
