Did you also copy /usr/mdec/boot to the rsd0a file system? Is it actually a ffsv2 filesystem? You can check with: # dumpfs /dev/rsd0a | more and the output should start like: file system: /dev/rsd0a format FFSv2ea endian little-endian (or "format FFSv2", that makes no difference to the bootloader).
