These days my go-to language for hobby projects is Apple's Swift language. I really wish that I could compile and run Swift programs on NetBSD, but there is not a port right now.
I don't have time right now to attempt a port but I can provide a modest amount of material support to a motivated developer who can. IIUC, a port to FreeBSD exists and an OpenBSD is gaining way, so the path to a NetBSD port may not be very long.
