Hi,

An idea for a program for inclusion with future releases of NC:

A "first aid" program, something that can diagnose problems you get with your
internet connections, or at least something that can output some stuff to a
file, like Genesis does when you connect. An example of where this could be
useful is if you are on the net and notice that you keep get stalls. This
could be attributed to several things, e.g. a slow server at the other end,
poor dial up, modem being crap, poor phone line, overloaded seriual port etc..
This First Aid program could test the serial port at the speed you dial up to
see whether it is too high, ping the remote servers etc..

All of this could be done using the various packages that come with NC, for
instance you could use NetInfo to ping servers (or even just type ping xxxx
into the shell =) and suchlike, but for the novice this would be an invaluable
tool. I remember when I first got NC1.1 last January, the package worked fine,
but I had loads of problems with the speed of my connection with my 56k
modem - even now 18 months later I'm not entirely sure of what sometimes
causes my connection to be really crap, although I have improved it by
upgrading the modem and phone line etc.

Actually this sounds a bit of a far fetched idea but it seemed a good idea at
first so I may as well put it forward anyway.

Yours,
