Using IP addresses is a bad idea, they aren't guaranteed to remain the
same, whereas the domain address should.

For example, if the machine on 130.88.202.49 develops a fault the
sysadmin can simply change the DNS entry to point ntp2a.mcc.co.uk to the
same address as ntp2b.mcc.co.uk. anyone using ntp2a.mcc.co.uk won't
notice the change, whereas it will stop working for you.

DNS lookup is crucial to the correct functioning of the internet, so it
it generally handled by fast, dedicated machines. You shouldn't be able
to notice any difference over a modem connection. An address like this
is used a lot so it will probably be cached by the DNS server, making it
even faster.

Even if it did take a second longer, what difference does it make,
compared with being always able to access the service?
