There is, the way you are currently doing it. The use of * and / to
represent /light/ and *strong* emphasis dates back to long before its
interpretation as italic and bold. Anyone using a purely text based
mailer will understand exactly what you mean without the graphic
boldening.

That was originally introduced by THOR, but "-- " has always been the
standard sig separator, this is simply a more attractive way of
representing it.
