To which I reply:

Maybe, and this is only a guess mind, maybe that when trash is emptied the files are 
/really/ deleted and then when a 'cleanup database' is run it removes the remaining 
out of date messages :-)

They are set as unarchived - MDII wouldn't even have moved them from
their location to Trash if they were not.

To rephrase:

I set the flag of 465 messages to deleted. 465 messages got moved to
TRSH. I emptied TRASH and 465 messages "vanished". I cleaned up the
database but it only found 255 messages to remove. Why didn't it
remove the other 199 messages I deleted as well?
