Thanks to Gadget/Simon (who is on this list) I got a better init
string for my modem which (fingers crossed) has worked perfect so far. 
It forces your modem to connect at a LOWER rate to avoid the modem
having to retrain and cause possible line drops all the bl**dy time.

For everybody who may be interested the modem init string is:

AT&F&D2+MS=12,1,300,44000,0,0\r

Forces the connection to be no more than 44000.  I used to get around
51xxx without it!
