I've got some stuff that might be useful if you can ignore the winoze
crap in it.

I don't know where I got this from, but here it is.

Internet Connection Troubleshooting

As 56k modems operate in a significantly different way from 33600
modems, and use the phone line to their maximum potential, they are
more sensitive to line conditions. For example, on a line which has
excessive noise, a 56k modem is far more likely to disconnect because
of this noise than a 33600 modem. The below commands can decrease the
frequency of modem disconnections from an Internet connection. For
full User Manuals which contain complete AT Command listing, please
check the CD that shipped with your modem or visit our Download page.

How to use the commands

To use these commands under Windows95/98 when using Dial-up Networking
to connect to the Internet, you will need to do the following:

1. Click Start-settings-control panel.
2. Double-click theModems icon.
3. Select themodem.
4. ClickProperties.
5. ClickConnection - Advanced.
6. Insert one of the below strings of AT Commands into the Extra
Settings Box.

Problem: Dial-up Networking does not report modem-to-modem connect
rate e.g. it reports 57600 or 115200 (port speeds).

Add W2 to extra settings.

Problem: Modem intermittently disconnects from the Internet.

This is a problem common to all brands of 56k modems, caused by
several factors. Try the following before using the recommended AT
Commands:

a) Ensure the modem phone cable is plugged directly into the wall
jack, with no other phones or extension leads running off the wall
jack (the phones draw current which can cause disconnections, and
extension leads can have faulty wiring). Also disable any faxes or
other telephony devices.

b) Try connecting to another ISP in order to rule out the ISP as the
cause of the disconnections.

c) Try using your modem on at another location, in order to rule out
your phone lines as the cause of the disconnections.

d) If you have call-waiting, disable it by dialing *52 (or whatever)
before using your Internet connection.

e) Disable error control and data compression under
start/settings/control panel/modems/properties/connection/advanced -
this can create a more stable connection.

If the above does not resolve this issue, use this string: &F&D2%C1W2

If the above string does not decrease the number of disconnections,
try the following string for 56k modems:

For modems using 56KFlex firmware, use:

&F&D2%C1W2+MS=56,1,2400,XXXXX (substitute XXXXX with a speed lower
than initial connection, e.g. if initial = 44000 then 42000. Continue
to step down the maximum speed until satisfactory results are
achieved).

For modems usingV.90 firmware, use:

&F&D2%C1W2+MS=12,1,2400,XXXXX (substitute XXXXX with a speed lower
than initial connection, e.g. if initial = 44000 then 42000. Continue
to step down the maximum speed until satisfactory results are
achieved).

ForPCI 1456VQH-R modems use:

&F&D2%C1W2+MS=V90,1,2400,XXXXX (substitute XXXXX with a speed lower
than initial connection, e.g. if initial = 44000 then 42000. Continue
to step down the maximum speed until satisfactory results are
achieved).

Problem: Downloads are very slow.

This can be caused by a variety of factors, including line noise, busy
servers, or the Internet Provider you are using. It can be helpful to
use the following commands: AT&F+MS=11,0&D2%C1

For1456VQH PCI modem use AT&F+MS=V34,0&D2%C1

Problem: 56k modem connects at high speeds, but download speed slowly
decreases.

Take note of the initial connect speed e.g. 40000. Then use the
following string to lock modem to a step down from this speed:

For modems withK56flex firmware, use : -&F&D2%C1+MS=56,1,2400,38000
(or whatever a step down from the connect rate is).

For modems withV.90 firmware, use : -

&F&D2%C1+MS=12,1,2400,38000 (or whatever a step down from the connect
rate is).

For 1456VQH-R PCI modems, use : -

&F&D2%C1+MS=V90,1,2400,38000 (or whatever a step down from the connect
rate is).

Problem: 56k modem connects to Internet, but then does not transmit data.

Insert this string in the extra settings box:
&F&D2%C1+MS=11,0

For the1456VQH PCI Modem, use:
&F&D2%C1+MS=V34,0
