It's not that hard, really. Just follow these peasy steps, and X-Arc
will be proudly sat on your toolbar!

Select the Octopus window, then select "Settings... Octopus" from
     the menu.
When the Prefs program pops up, select "Internet Dock" from the
list on the left. A settings window appears.
Under where it says "Button Bank" on the right, click on the
button "New". A new window appears.
Enter a name (e.g. X-Arc) for the new toolbar button, make sure
the type is set to CLI (if this is changed, the program deletion
bug rears its head), and set a path for the program. Also, pick an
image for the button if you want one. I used
"NetConnect3:Data/Images/packers/Lha" for X-Arc. If you want to
start the program from a key or keys (e.g. Shift + F10), this can
be set in the "Hotkey" field.
Click the advanced settings tab, and change the "Current Dir" to a
directory you keep most of your archives in. Your browser's
download directory is a good bet.
Click the Ok button at the bottom, and the window disappears,
leaving you back at the main Prefs window. The new X-Arc button
will have appeared in the "Button Bank" list on the right. Drag it
to the "Icon Bar" list (you can place it where you like in the
list by dragging it to the top or bottom of the list to scroll up
or down. When the dashed line is between the buttons you want the
X-Arc button to be, let go of the mouse button). Finally,
select "Save" to quit the prefs and save the new setup, or "Use"
or "Test" to try out the new button.

Despite the horror stories, I have used Octopus since NC3 was
released, and had no problems whatsoever. Be warned, though: setting
the launch type to something other than "CLI" is very likely to delete
your program, so *don't do it!

This technique can be adapted to any other program, too. Don't
hesitate to ask for any more help on setting up Octopus, although I
hope my instructions should be clear enough.
