Someone around here has been mumbling again. Apparently they go

If you're running it on a separate MUI screen, go to the MUI settings
and run the screen inspector to see how many colors you're running it
on and to change it if you wish.
If not, you must be running on WB, in which case it will use however
many are available. If you want to use more, run the MUI prefs from
within Voyager. Click the "System" tab and then on screen inspector.
Add a screen with the mode and depth you require, and then save the
settings. Now choose this screen within the main MUI voyager prefs and
save again.
