I had a monumental hard drive crash yesterday which left the Amiga in a
bit of a state. Fortunately, I managed to restore/recover pretty much
everything. The one major problem was that my copy of Microdot-II hadn't
been backed up recently (yeah yeah, I know!).
With luck, MD2 was intact with the exception of the microdot.prefs file
which was apparently destroyed. On loading MD2 for the first time after
the crash, only the PRIV, SPOOL and TRASH folders were present and
correct, and all my preferences set to the defaults. Okay, this is
understandable if .prefs file was destroyed - it's just created a new one.
However, I knew my mail was still in the MD2 database, just that I couldn't
access them.
After some digging around without much luck I restored a copy of the .prefs
file from the most recent backup. This is almost the same though
some filters have changed and I was missing two recent folders. The
missing mails, less the two folders, were restored so I added the two
missing folders in the order they were created and voila! Everything
appears to be normal(-ish) once again.
Right, so I have my preferences back to how they were at the last backup,
all the folders with the right mails apparently restored, and some old
filters which I can easily update by hand. The folders though have the
dates according to the last updated dates from the time of of the backup -
I'm happy with this as they will no doubt update the next time I check my
mail.
Big question is: is it safe to download my mail again? I'm confident it
would be okay but want to make sure that things won't be out of synch or
screwy - I don't want to download new mails and find MD2 getting confused.
Am I just panicking? Has anyone tried this?
Thanks in advance.
John Chandler
