MD2 has 'always' had trouble downloading newsgroup lists (something to
do with the long names, I think).
You could get the list directly by downloading from the Wirenet
website and running Neil Bothwicks ARexx script on it.

If you know the group you need, just use the menu groups-->add
newsgroup and enter comp.sys.amiga.hardware directly into "name" and
click OK. You can then sub to it from Groups-->subscribe
