Hi all,
I was wondering if there was any thought on an easy hack to make devices in
visual map view show the router sysname (via snmp) vs. ip or dns only. It
seems if ND *can* resolve dns, it'll use dns, but I find 95% of IT shops
never add network devices in dns, so it just shows IP addresses, which is
not always useful, particularly to a customer not used to visualizing their
own network for the first time (or me as the new consultant).
Ideally there should be a toggle in the menu, to show ip, dns. or
snmp-found sysname of the device to make recognizing adjacent devices
easier than just by IP, particularly in big flat L2 networks. This has
been a bit of an annoyance in ND since 2.0.
I'd settle for a quick hack I can port along for my own druthers, but
otherwise would appreciate it to consider it a feature request too whenever
someone gets bored. :)
Thanks in advance!

Hi Michael
Interesting as I thought this was already the case:
https://github.com/netdisco/netdisco/blob/8ff595c32113fb3749d9bf10c37b4cd374e0b70c/lib/App/Netdisco/Web/Plugin/Device/Neighbors.pm#L239
We shall need to look into it!

Thank you Oliver, that is odd - admittedly my server tends to be dated that
I still use, if this was updated at some point, then my apologies for the
request.
It's just a weird thing I noticed that annoyed me a bit over the years, but
I intend to use ND2 map views for some docs, that would be really, really
nice to show a sysname on, that I've never been able to coax ND to do
outside of networks I've built/nurtured myself with dns.
Small things, but something I was finally curious to ask about. I need to
build a modern instance of ND anyways, I'll check to see if
different/better now from my last usage, which is likely a few years old
now since update.
