Apologies – I see this is now being tracked as an issue on github. I will
follow it there.

Subject: rediscover cancelled: [IP] failed to return valid serial
Hi Netdisco experts…
Since upgrading yesterday to the latest version 2.088002, I have a huge number
of devices that are failing discovery with the following error:
“rediscover cancelled: 192.168.8.1 failed to return valid serial”
When I run via netdisco-do, the output confirms the same thing:
[1] 2025-09-02 12:13:00 debug snmp reader cache warm: [192.168.8.1]
[1] 2025-09-02 12:13:00 debug [192.168.8.1:161] try_connect with cached tag
default_v2_readonly
[1] 2025-09-02 12:13:00 debug [192.168.8.1:161] try_connect with v: 2, t: 0.2,
r: 0, class: SNMP::Info::Layer2::HP, comm: <hidden>
[1] 2025-09-02 12:13:01 debug ⬅ (error) rediscover cancelled: 192.168.8.1
failed to return valid serial
The web interface (based on previous discoveries) shows the correct serial
number.
I see this in the release notes for the 2.088001:
- revert mistaken field_protection should protect serial on new devices
Please could someone tell me what this new feature means, and if/how I can work
around it to restore discovery?
If I need to rollback the Netdisco version to 2.088000, will I also need to
restore the database from backup or is the schema unchanged?
Best regards,

Hello,
We have been using netdisco for several years without major issues. Recently we
installed some devices that only support snmpv3 with SHA256 or SHA512. But it
seems that netdisco (or better said: the SNMP module of Perl) doesn't support
it, please, could anybody confirm if this is true? I have found this:
https://www.claudiokuenzler.com/blog/1205/how-to-perl-net-snmp-v3-authentication-protocol-support-newer-sha-sha256-sha512
And changed the Security/USM.pm but to no avail, so I rolled back the
modifications.
Best regards!
Diego
