Fixed by:
1. Running make installdeps
(had forgotten to run make testdeps after installing packages from the
Debian repos)
2. Increasing memory from 512 MB to 2 GB
(after seeing OOM killer messages in /var/log/syslog)
3. Re-installing from scratch
