it would be helpful if you could tell us a little more about the
organization of the  table.  Is it something like:

master columns
detail columns-1
detail columns-2
        .
        .
detail columns-N

where each detail columns-i contains the same set of fields, differentiated
by some naming convention, e.g. trans_date_2 is the transaction date of the
second detail and trans_date_5 is the transaction date of the fifth detail?
