The performance claims made for the IBM JVM interested me too.

This error does not surprise me.
I have read (I think in last months JavaWorld) that one reason the previous
version of the IBM JVM did well on Volano mark was the use of a small stack.
They probably have the same optimization in the latest version.

You can probably change the stack size it is using by setting a command line
argument.  For the sun JVM this is the -ss argument.

If you get your app to work maybe you could share the problems you faced,
solutions you found, and performance you got with the mailing list.
