Hi Shekar, my friend with Sun and web server experience says:
====================
Hard to say. 2 million "flat" over 24-hours? Or 2 million across 8
hours? Big difference.
Does a "hit" mean a page + a bunch of images? Again, big difference.
In general, the web server can be pretty small. 2 million hits isn't
that much, unless you get large spikes and aren't including images in
the 2 million count.
The app server - no idea on the requirements of ND. Plus, I'd guess
that it really depends on the size of the application.
Oracle - same deal. It depends on the query, the database, and what
you're asking it to do. In general, against small, properly indexed,
simple tables, two million is nothing. But if the transactions are
complex and the DB is heavy, then... you're looking for a big box.
So! Although it's a great question, it really requires a lot of
analysis. I'd say you'd want enterprise-class boxes, just due to the
fact that this SOUNDS like a mission-critical app. As for horsepower,
it's hard to say without more info.
I could build an app that could consume all 3 boxes, regardless of what
you have.

Subject: [ND] Sun sizing ideas....
Hello,
Anyone with experience in sizing Sun servers.... and capacity...
Our new app will have 3 tier operation...
1- Web server
We are expecting looking to have 2 million pages/day hits
2 - App server(Netdynamics)
2 million pages to be processed per day between websever and DBMS
3- DBMS server (oracle)
2 million read/writes to be performed...
We have decided SUN and ND. We need to get some idea as to how to size
the Sun CPUs (1, 2, 4, 8, 16)... Anyone with any experience, please
share some ideas..
Thanks
