For crying out loud. Our entire society is (Oliver) Stoned with conspiracy
theorists. Sheesh.

Grace ("been there done that") has been around for quite a while at this point
if you read the forum much. (though her email addr looks diff).

You're right about the bigfoot allaire poster (me think BIG foot goto mouth -- serve
as cork).

As to the original post, a few thoughts:

Yefim Natis is (or at least recently was) an analyst for Gartner. And s/he has written
about the app server space. So, if the supposed quote is troll-bait, someone went to
at least a little effort.

There's little doubt that there'll be changes resulting from the Netscape-Sun-AOL
Alliance (sounds
so grand, like something out of "Star Wars", yet the mashing together of buearacracies
is probably
a more apt image).

It's been said all along (and in all parties best interest) that the resultant
product(s) would yield clear
migration paths for existing customers from both ND and NAS. Time will tell.

Mayhaps the article is accurate. I don't know. I certainly hope ND forms the core of
newer offerings
rather than NAS. Again we'll see. Probably official announcements forthcoming Real
Soon Now.

Here's another, *definite*, but older (Mar 29 '99) Yefim Natis quote to soothe the
soul in the meanwhile.

With Sun now taking the lead on enterprise
software sales, NAS seems likely
to take a back seat--particularly if Java
Software division president Alan
Baratz has anything to say about it.

                                          THE BARATZ FACTOR
"Baratz has made a career commitment to
NetDynamics," Gartner Group
analyst Yefim Natis said. "My expectation is
that Sun will pursue its strategy
with NetDynamics as the core technology. I
think NAS will be used primarily
by AOL in its enterprise division to build
some technology AOL needs for its
own operations." In the short term, the
customers of both application servers
are likely to see an infusion of "new
investment and new vision," Natis said,
but there is also a "significant risk" for
both products.

Jeff Barca-Hall, who joined Inprise Corp. as
vice president of development
tools in October after leaving a similar
position at Netscape, said he doesn't
believe Sun and AOL will make orphans of
NetDynamics or NAS customers.

"I don't see any indication other than that
Sun and AOL will move forward
with supporting both products. I think
they've got to do that," he said. "
==================================================================

I presume that whatever arises out of the Alliance will be part result of technical
analysis as
well as political process. Having Baratz on ND side (if true) is great. Of course,
Ariko (COO of Netscape)
is VP of Alliance.

I can't guess as to the fall out. I'll "wait for the facts Jack" and go back to
coding till official news.
Big changes all but guarranteed.
