Yes, If u r populating from a DO, computred column is the solution.
If u r populating it manually, there is work around.
I haven't worked out it, but this is a suggestion.
Set the item in the list to some junk value like '1234567890'
and in the onLoad event of the html, go through all the options of the combo
box and
replace that string by spaces
