Are you doing doAutoFill  in the page-level onBeforeDisplay or the
field-level onBeforeDisplay

If page-level, I don't know what to suggest.

If field-level, you might be rebuilding the combobox after default 'select'
processing has occurred.  In this case, I would try doing a manual 'select'
on the combobox, using the field value as the argument.
