another _possibility_:

User loads a page in context of a session.  But, for some reason, the 
existing session id is not sent in, and ND automatically creates a new 
session.  When page attempts to get existing session objects, it comes up 
empty because this is a different session, from ND's point of view.

This could happen if you are generating your own html for buttons or hrefs 
(and omit the name value pair for session id), or if you are going to a 
non-ND page and then back.
