The DISPLAY variable points to the server (and monitor/screen) that
is supposed to do the rendering of your GUI.

You must run this under X, not just thru a telnet session.

If you're logged in as userA, do
xhost +
as userA, then su, then
in ksh:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
or in sh:
DISPLAY=:0.0; export DISPLAY
or in csh:
setenv  DISPLAY :0.0

Then follow the instructions.
