I'm using Net Dynamics 4.1.3.8 with IE 4.72.3110.8. I encountered the Gray Box problem with my applets in development. My solution was to correct the CLASSPATH enviornment variable as described in the Net Dynamics 4 documentation series. The CLASSPATH environment must include the full path to the nd_client_4x.jar and the full path to your Development Projects directory. In my case, the Projects directory is located on a network drive since I'm using a remote application server. This solution is used for development, not deployment.
