Peter makes great points; I had forgotten to mention Microsoft. :-)
The all-Microsoft solution (ASP, VB, MTS, MS-SQL, NT) is fast
for small apps and has nifty tools for building simple GUIs.
The Microsoft solution is designed to exclude other tools,
and will not run on any other platforms.

For comparison, the J2EE standard is owned by Sun with the goal of
creating an open industry standard to benefit all web developers.
J2EE has full support from Sun, IBM, BEA, HP, Intel, AOL, Netscape,
and every major Internet company (except for Microsoft of course).
J2EE also has full support from many freeware and open-sourcers
like Linux, the Apache webserver, and the Enhydra appserver.

Yes, in theory and in practice. :-) Big advantages: J2EE is free, comes
with source code, has much stronger security, runs on far more platforms,
and is implemented by a wide variety of companies and open-source teams.

I completely agree. Proprietary systems just can't keep up with standards,
especially when both ASP and J2EE are both fast and relatively easy.

Have you tried Java 1.3 yet? The speed improvements are awesome!
Our testing guys have seen Java apps run *faster* than C++ code
because the Java is much smarter about caching and allcations.

After seeing Java 1.3 in action, I don't think anyone writing web apps
will ever worry about the speed issue ever again. The bottleneck will
be the routers. :-)

Cheers,

Joel
