I have had this kind of problem in the distant past, but none in recent
times. I don't know if it is ND that got better (that is if you are not
talking about ND 4.1.3) or the fact that I chose emacs (Gnu emacs) for all
my outside editing.

Emacs and ND Studio co-exist very well. Each knows when the file has been
changed by the other. And with the way emacs is typically used (you don't
close emacs many times during the day) there is no risk of losing any code.
