Generally a good decision, but think about buying two mid end servers instead.
That way you are more flexible in operating the system later.

Now THIS is wholly determined by your personal ability in writing
iptables filter rules. You MUST get comfortable with iptables,
and then judge by yourself.

If you know it, and feel much more comfortable with its way to set up
things, that could be a wise choice. We cannot decide this for you.

At work, we are migrating away from checkpoint to iptables, for a whole
load of reasons.
