Hmmm ... we can't have that.

I can't do anything but give you a watermark. I'm not an advanced router
expert, all I can do is give you something to compare with.

You say that this also happens when you download from the gateway
itself. I.e., it's not masquerade dependant.

I have Red Hat 7.2, kernel 2.4.18, iptables 1.2.7 (CVS from yesterday).
However, all was the same when I had kernel 2.4.16 and iptables 1.2.3.

pppd version is 2.4.1-2.

I have a single ppp connection on a static IP address given to me by my
ISP, 56K v90 Xircom modem.

I have a full iptables firewall running with all ftp state filtered.

I use kppp (KDE utility) out of Gnome to run connections, there's no
"Internet on demand", since I don't nat/masquerade.

I've just downloaded 2 5MB RH libc rpm update files from sunsite.dk, my
maximum bandwidth is 5.5Kb. I was using Netscape 6.2.2, because my new
gftp doesn't work - it needs one of the libc files.

Both simultaneous downloads were given equal bandwidth, one came in
before the other and the last one was then given full bandwidth.

For the rest, this is the normal pattern of behaviour on my machine and
has never been any different.

So, the main differences between your set up and mine are:

1: Static IP number;
2: I never nat or masquerade;
3: I do it all from Gnome;
4: kppp;
5: Xircom PCMCIA modem vs. US Robotics.

Possible differences are:

1: Kernel and IP tables version (though you can more or less rule this
out);
2: pppd version: I read that the standard RH 7.2 pppd 2.4.0 had bugs and
should be replaced by 2.4.1, which I did immediately after installing RH
7.2.

Looking at the whole, I'd examine:

1: pppd version;
2: Modem.

I.e. others do not experience your difficulties, so it must be something
radical.

Sorry this is so vague, but the thought of you bursting into tears was
too, too much to ignore.

Success!

Tony
