well, i've been using various poptop versions with various linux kernel
versions for quite some time :)

no, this is not the terminating error.  May I ask you what kind of clients
you are using?  W2K is known to send a single frame with broken PPTP 
checksum within every connection setup.  This frame is immediately 
retransmitted with the correct checksum afterwards.
