According to the profiler, with your code the time to partition a list of 1000 patches into sublists of length 2 is comparable to the time required to rescale a histogram plot and histogram an attribute all the patches (including the creation of the list of attribute values). If I simply recreate #lst as `n-values (length #lst) [item ? #lst]`, this takes less than a third of that time (which still seems like a lot).
It is quite possible that I am being surprised for no good reason.
